Formula NASCAR?

There is a good chance I'll get some flack from this but I really don't care. As I write this, I'm sitting here watching the Formula 1 race from Spa, and have noticed over the past couple of races that I'm less excited about it. There have been several god passes, but I tend to dwell a bit on the cars and the technology.

There is no question that a Formula 1 car is the height of technology in motor racing, but it seems they've become spec cars in some of the most interesting places. I started watching Formula 1 after the sport went to grooved tires, and normally aspirated engines, but I have seen replays of some of the older races. To me, when you give the teams some design options in their engines, and other important areas, you end up with a much more interesting race. I understand that these rules changes were designed to make the sport cheaper, and that is fine, but it should be a little more like prototype racing.

In prototype racing they are allowed variety in their engines, suspension and aerodynamics. The next examples of this I can think of are the Audi R10 and the Penske Porsche. They are in different classes, but they can have almost anything under the engine cover as long as they suck all of their air through a regulated intake hole. The engine in the Audi is a multi turbo diesel. This has made things very interesting in prototype racing. The cars are impressive, and they handle very differently from each other. This is something that seems to have become missing in Formula 1.

I really think there needs to be something done in Formula 1 that allows the teams to try different things and see what works the best. This will also allow the drivers to show their abilities a little more and relying less on the pit crews to win the races. I may be a bit off here, but it really seems that the races are mostly won in the pits, and garages. Much of that seems to be done before the race even starts. I will continue to watch F1 because I still enjoy the sport, but ti would be nice to see them given some choice in displacement based on induction types. It might also be nice to see them return to some kind of tire war instead of an orchestrated spec tire choice.
